Windermere sits on the Morningside border in Berea, Durban — a leafy, residential pocket that puts you four minutes' walk from Florida Road and five minutes' drive from the Indian Ocean. It's where you stay when you want the city close but not loud. All three Hampton Collection properties are here.
From King Shaka International Airport: 30–35 minutes by car. There's no airport shuttle worth planning around — Uber and Bolt are reliable and reasonably priced in Durban, and both pick up at the airport. If you're hiring a car, every apartment except 11C has its own secure parking bay (11C uses guarded street parking).
Check-in is self-service — you get a personal door code, so a late flight doesn't mean waiting for someone with keys. Check-in from 15:00, check-out by 11:00.
Florida Road is the reason visitors know this neighbourhood: a kilometre of restaurants, coffee shops, bars and galleries in restored Victorian buildings, and it's a four-minute walk from the apartments. Go in the morning for coffee and brunch, or in the evening for dinner and cocktails. It's lively and walkable at both ends of the day. Every apartment has a full self-catering kitchen and arrives with a complimentary starter kit, so you don't need a shopping run on night one.
Most guests use Uber or Bolt — both are widely available and we recommend them over metered taxis. Driving yourself is easy too: the beachfront is 5 minutes, Moses Mabhida Stadium about 2km, uShaka Marine World about 6km, Umhlanga's beaches 15 minutes, and Gateway Theatre of Shopping about 16 minutes. Traffic peaks on weekday mornings and late afternoons — plan beach days around it.
Suncoast Beach is the closest sand at roughly 3.7km. North Beach and Addington are minutes further along the Golden Mile promenade, and if you want the postcard version, Umhlanga's lighthouse beach is a 15-minute drive north.
Durban is genuinely year-round. Summer (November–February) is hot, humid and busy; winter (June–August) is mild, dry and arguably the best time — warm days, cool evenings, and the sea still swimmable. Event weekends (the Durban July in early July, Comrades Marathon in June, big matches and concerts at Moses Mabhida) book out early — if your dates are fixed, check availability sooner rather than later. Every apartment has air conditioning, uncapped 250Mbps fibre WiFi and a Smart TV with Netflix. Load-shedding is a South African reality; the 11 Leighorne apartments carry inverter battery backup so the WiFi and essentials stay on. The Leighorne properties have a dedicated night guard, electric fencing and cameras; 145 12th Avenue is secured with fencing and CCTV.
